Discover & Support Your Authentic Self

Providing neurodiversity-affirming and inclusive psychological support for people who seek to understand themselves better and create environments where they can thrive.

Hello!

About me...

My name is Sharmayne and I am a Psychologist and AuDHDer with a passion for supporting people to realise, explore, and understand their individual self-identities and how to navigate their place in the world. I am a strong advocate for people being true to their values in whatever wonderful way they find best.

My sweet helper

During our online sessions you may meet my empathetic helper K-Dog.  He is a 7yr old Rottweiler cross and loves a cuddle.

Services

ongoing remote Therapy/support

All ongoing therapy/support is provided through telehealth by video (preferred) or phone call.

Sessions are available Tuesday - Thursday each week for individuals aged 16+ years.

I am currently scheduling ahead for initial sessions in August 2025. If we are a good fit we can schedule ongoing weekly/fortnightly therapy sessions.

I have limited availability and once these fill I will offer to waitlist if appropriate.

benefits of telehealth appointments

  • Reduced time and cost of associated with travel to and from appointments
  • Flexibility of where you have the appointment e.g., at home, the beach, on holidays and how the appointment takes place (call/video (with options of whether you are on camera or not)/other flexible options for low spoon/low capacity days)
  • Less time required off work, organising child-care etc
  • More convenient and easier to fit into your busy schedule
  • Reduced waiting times for services
  • Your appointment can go ahead if you are unwell or need to self-isolate. Face to face appointments would need to be rescheduled.

getting the most out of telehealth appointments

  • Prepare your space: Find a quiet, private space with good lighting (if possible) where you can sit/stand/or move around comfortably for the duration of the session. Make sure the room is free of external distractions that may impact on your privacy, such as housemates, or family members. You can also use headphones to improve sound quality and maintain confidentiality.
  • Prepare your device/technology: Check your camera, microphone, and speaker are working, and fully charged or plugged in. You'll also need a stable internet connection. You will receive a Teams (video meeting) or phone call at your scheduled appointment time (please note that your practitioner may be running a few minutes late from a previous session but will advise you on any delays where possible).
  • Prepare yourself: Prior to your sessions use the restroom, get yourself a nice drink (not alcohol), have any fidgets you like within reach, and make yourself comfortable in your prepared space - During the session if you've forgotten anything you need or would like to take a break please let Sharmayne know.

Therapy is eclectic, and client-lead. You decide on your therapy goals and will be supported to explore ways to reach these. I have experience in evidence-based therapies including:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Solutions Focused Therapy
  • Interpersonal Therapy
  • Mindfulness strategies
  • Collaborative-Proactive Solutions (CPS)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

I also have experience in supporting and maintaining functional capacity and developing self-awareness and self-confidence to work towards NDIS goals for clients with this funding type.

While I welcome all individuals, I am aware that I have gaps in my lived-experience and will upskill, if appropriate, however, in some circumstances I recognise that I may not be the best fit for your needs and will refer on in these instances.

Please let me know if there are particular accommodations I can make so that you can be most comfortable when engaging in services with us.

What I do not offer...

  • Crisis support for clients with acute suicide risk, with active psychosis, or for those at risk of harming themselves or others. These conditions require in-person support.
  • Mental health treatment for active, high-risk eating conditions such as anorexia or bulimia. These conditions require in-person support.
  • WorkCover support for injured workers. I am not registered to provide these services.
  • Forensic support to clients with open criminal court matters, those on community corrections or parole orders, and those seeking support for violent or sexual offending or who are at risk of offending. This is outside of my scope.
  • Law Court assessments/reports
  • Marriage/Relationship Counselling
  • Services to individuals under the age of 16 - telehealth services may not be best suited to younger clients

Email or written enquiry is my preferred method of communication outside of sessions. As a sole trader I manage all of my own admin and enquiries and all clinical conversations incur fees. Due to my limited time, busy workload, and so that I can support you in the most financially beneficial way, please submit a written enquiry/email first. If a brief phone conversation is more suitable I will arrange a time with you from there.

I work with mostly with adults, however, am able to provide services to some adolescents (aged 16+) who are comfortable and confident in communicating through telehealth. This does require a private and safe environment free from external distractions to be effective. If you are unsure please feel free to reach out and we can discuss or trial a session to see if it will be the right fit.

As I manage my own admin and enquiries along with my regular client load, it may take some time for me to respond to you. Please allow 2 weeks for me to read your enquiry before chasing up. Depending on my capacity/spoons it may take me some time to respond but I will endeavour to keep you updated where possible.

3 days prior to your appointment, you will receive an automatically generated reminder email. 1 day prior to your appointment, you will receive an automatically generated reminder text.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appt, that's totally ok! I understand things can happen unexpectedly.

Appointments cancelled within 48 business hours will be charged the full session fee.

After 2 consecutive late cancellations/no shows without reasonable notice (excluding illness), all future appointments will be cancelled and offered to other clients on the waitlist.

I have experience working with people to address and explore their anxiety, various moods, emotional regulation, beliefs and values, and challenges finding ways to make the world fit them. I have worked with various neurodiverse clients and my lived experience and deep interest in researching and understanding neurodivergence allows me to appreciate some of the differences that my clients may experience.

Neurodiversity-affirming support is an approach that recognises and values the natural variation in human brains and cognition. It focuses on embracing brain differences, such as autism, ADHD, bipolar, schizophrenia, and dyslexia*, as unique strengths rather than deficits. This approach prioritises individualised care, compassion, and understanding, while helping to create supportive environments that accommodate each person's needs. It emphasises self-advocacy, challenges stigma and ableism, and promotes inclusion, aiming to empower neurodivergent individuals and celebrate their diverse ways of thinking and experiencing the world.

I stand by the phrase "Nothing about us without us" and are continuing to educate myself on NDA practices. As no two people are the same, I am happy to meet you where you are in your preferred language preferences, however, I endeavour to be on top of the latest preferences of the ND community.

I pride myself on growing and evolving with new information and reflect on my clients' lived-experiences.

*please note there are many other ways that brains are considered neurodivergent and this is just an example of some of the ways

Neurodiverse: A group or environment where there is a mix of different brain types. This is not a label for individuals. If we were to refer to every brain on earth we could say they are neurodiverse.

Neurodivergent: Refers to people whose brain functioning is different to the neuro-normative majority. This can be from birth (eg. Autism and ADHD) or acquired (eg. PTSD, traumatic brain injury)

Ableism:  The discrimination, prejudice, or social bias against people with disabilities or those perceived as having disabilities. It is based on the belief that people with disabilities are inferior to non-disabled people. Ableism can manifest in various ways, including negative attitudes, stereotypes, exclusion, unequal access to opportunities, and systemic barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from fully participating in society. It often involves assuming that people with disabilities need to be "fixed" or that their lives are less valuable or meaningful than those of non-disabled people.

Internalised ableism: When individuals with disabilities adopt negative beliefs, stereotypes, or attitudes about themselves due to societal messages that devalue disability. This can manifest as self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy, or believing they are inferior or less capable because of their disability. People with internalised ableism might feel shame about their disability, hide it, or strive to conform to able-bodied standards, often believing that their worth is tied to being "normal" or "non-disabled." Internalised ableism can affect mental health and self-esteem, reinforcing harmful societal views and preventing individuals from fully embracing their identities and needs.

There are some fantastic resources for preferred neurodiversity-affirming language below that you might find helpful if you are wanting to know more.
